How to Play

Learn how every MapGuesser mode works, how scoring is calculated, and how to play the daily challenge.

Every mode is played on the same world map. The question bar tells you what to do; the button at the bottom submits your answer. After each round you see the correct location, your score and a fact.

Guess the Place

  • Find the country: tap the named country on the map.
  • Place the capital / place the city: tap the map to drop a pin; the closer the pin, the higher the score.
  • Match the flag: look at the flag, then tap its country.
  • Type the country: type the highlighted country's name; accents are optional and close typos earn half credit.
  • Find the feature: tap the named sea, gulf, bay, strait, lake, river or ocean.
  • Which country? choose one of four names.
  • Tap the members: select every member of the named organisation; false alarms cost points.

Scoring

Pin questions score round(5000 × e^(−distance km / 1500)). A round counts as correct when the distance is within 400 km. Tap and flag questions score 5,000 for the right country. Typing scores 5,000 for an exact match and 2,500 for a close typo. Organisation questions score in proportion to correct members minus false alarms.

Rounds

Every quiz game is five rounds. Draw the Region plays three targets. There are no difficulty settings — everyone plays the same rules.

Draw the Region

Read the target, draw its outline with your finger or mouse, then submit. The score reflects how closely your outline follows the real border, up to 5,000 points. After you submit, the target outline is drawn over your drawing.

The daily challenge

Five rounds, the same for everyone, resetting at 00:00 UTC. Complete it once a day to build a streak; your streak and stats live in your browser.
